Burdett Trust appoints Professor Clare Cable as Chief Executive

The Burdett Trust is delighted to announce the appointment of Professor Clare Cable as its new Chief Executive. Clare replaces Shirley Baines, who is retiring after almost twenty years in this key role.

Clare has been Chief Executive and Nurse Director of the Queen’s Nursing Institute for Scotland for over a decade and previously, Policy Adviser to the Royal College of Nursing. She is a Florence Nightingale Foundation Scholar and has been Honorary Professor at Queen Margaret University Edinburgh since 2016. In 2023 she was made Visiting Professor at the University of the Highlands and Islands. Clare is a strategic nurse leader with significant expertise in charity governance, finance, leadership development and policy. Her overarching vision is to unleash the creativity of nurses to be catalysts for positive change in the health and well-being of communities.

Clare will take up her post in October 2024.

Background
The Burdett Trust for Nursing was established in 2002 with the aim of making charitable grants to support the nursing contribution to healthcare. The Trustees target their grants at projects that are nurse-led and that empower nurses to make significant improvements to the patient care environment. The Trustees regularly review and update their grant-making policies and procedures to ensure that their grants achieve positive outcomes for patients, nursing and healthcare practice.
