Junius S. Morgan Benevolent Fund

The Junius S. Morgan Benevolent Fund makes charitable grants to members of the nursing profession who are in hardship for a variety of reasons. The Burdett Trust is pleased to support this project in addition to providing grants to nurses, midwives, health visitors and allied health professionals for projects that will improve patient care.

Since its inception, the fund has made thousands of small grants to nurses, former nurses and nursing auxiliaries.

“Words can never express my gratitude. When I was ill the grant was like a shining light at the end of a very long dark tunnel…” Jane, 2019

History

Established in 1890 by policyholders of The Royal National Pension Fund for Nurses in memory of one of its founders, Mr Junius Spencer Morgan, the charity welcomes donations, large and small. As all administrative costs are borne by the Burdett Trust for Nursing, 100% of donations reach nurses in need.

“I would like to send my heartfelt thanks to the charities involved that enabled me to purchase my scooter. After 18 months of not being able to get around I now have freedom.” Avril, 2019

Grant policy

The Fund assists registered nurses and health care assistants who have practised in the UK for a minimum of five years. The Trustees consider applications from nurses, former nurses and health care assistants who find themselves in hardship for a variety of reasons. Prolonged physical or mental ill health, broken marriages or the death of the primary wage earner may have created unforeseen expenditure and debt. All applicants are encouraged to help themselves by prudent management of their resources and in some cases, a prompt cash grant is all that is needed to achieve this. Please note the Fund does not usually pay educational fees.

The Fund will make cash payments to assist beneficiaries for various purposes as the need arises. The Fund does not pay residential or nursing home fees, holidays or respite care.

The maximum given to any individual in any one year will not normally exceed £1,500.

“Thank you all from the bottom of my heart for gifting me the extremely generous grant. I am not used to people helping me or indeed asking for help and was in absolute dire straits financially.” Helen, 2019
